The Camden Art and Tile Company known as Camark of Camden, Arkansas was established in the fall of 1926 by Samuel J. "Jack" Carnes. John Lessell was hired by Mr. Carnes as art director and is credited with developing the initial lustre and iridescent Lessell wares for Camark ["CAM"den, "ARK"ansas] before his death in December of 1926. Before the plant's opening in the spring of 1927 Carnes appointed Jeanne [Lessell's widow] and his stepdaughter Billie to oversee the art department's production of Le-Camark. Production by the Lessell family included variations of J.B. Owens' ""Sudanese" and "Opalescence", along with Weller's "Marengo" and "Lemar." Camark's version of Marengo was called "Old English." They also, made wares identical to Weller's "LaSa." Pieces made by John Lessell while in Ohio were signed "Lessell" and those made by Jeanne and Billie in Arkansas during 1927 were signed "Le-Camark." By 1928 Camark's production centered on traditional glazes. Drip glazes similar to Maurice Pottery were produced, in particular the green and matt finishes became the primary focus and would continue so until Camark closed in the early 1960's. Between the 1960's and 1980's the company operated mainly as a retail store selling existing inventory, but some limited production occurred. In 1986 the company was purchased by the Ashcraft family of Camden, but no pottery has yet been made at the factory.
