Early 19th Century English Giltwood Architectural Mirror

An English giltwood architectural mirror of rectangular form measuring 23 ¼ inches long by 13 ¾ inches wide. Mirror has two plain pilasters flanking a looking-glass surmounted by a hand-painted tablet of three vignettes: a) sailing ship at fort with two men in rowboat; b) four female figures – one with cornucopiae, another holding aloft an olive branch, Britannia, and the fourth female with Phrigian cap on long pole touching Britannia’s Union Jack oval shield; c) double house with soldier in centre flanked by male and female figures. Top of mirror is flat with dentilated frieze. Reverse of frame penciled: “Queen Anne mirror aged 1740 about.” We date it around 1815.
