Fabulous late 1800s spongeware pitcher has a creamy yellowware background with a green overall sponge decoration, including inside the top.
Pitcher shows signs of being made in a two piece mold and has a fabulous handle with scrolls top and bottom. It still retains much of the gold gilding on the top rim – unusual to find, as most that had this gilding was long ago worn away.
Measurements are 6 1/4 inches high, 5 inches across top including spout and 4 3/4 inches across bottom.
Condition is very good, with some areas of light staining, a tiny shallow flake on the side of rim near handle, a tiny chip on the front at the base (spout facing left), and a larger chip on the back at the base. There is light overall crazing, noticed on close inspection, but no cracks or hairlines.
This lovely sponge decorated 18th century pitcher has survived the years very well! A nice example of early spongeware that will add excitement and beauty wherever it is displayed.
