CHILD'S PEARLWARE TRANSFERWARE NURSERY RHYME MUG
CAT AND FIDDLE & BO PEEP AND SHEEP
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1830
This is a little child's transferware mug, circa 1830. This diminutive piece stands 3 " tall x 2 7/8" wide with an applied loop handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in rich marine or navy blue with a scene on one side of Little Bo Peep, staff in hand, who has Lost her Sheep. A geometric ribbon separates this scene. The other side of this marvelous mug features I Diddle Diddle, The Cat & the Fiddle. One of the most outrageous transfered cats we have ever seen. The scenes are naive and richly detailed.
The piece is unmarked. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century.
The mug is is exceptional condition. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines and no repairs.
Children's early mugs of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The images are delightful, a throwback to a much simpler time. The cup will make a great addition to your collection of children's dishes. Please email me with any questions or if you would like to see additional photos.
