Rare 1830 Childs ABC Mug ~ S + T
S IS FOR SHEEP T IS FOR TIGER
Staffordshire England c. 1830
This exceptional mug stands 3 " high x 3 " wide, excluding the applied handle. The child's mug is transfer printed in blue-green with a pearlware glaze.
One side has an upper case capital letter ~ S. S stands for Sheep who oft sleep in a fold.
The other side of the mug has an upper case capital letter~ T. T is a Tiger savage and bold.
This particular animal series in alphabet mugs is one of the first to have been produced for children's early education.
The mug is in good condition with a pearlware glaze and a fine turned base. There is a tight hairline on the base of the handle, looks almost as if it was in the making of the mug. A 3/16" chip to the inside rim.
Mugs like these were given as gifts to children on special occasions and were used as educational tools, as well. A lovely and rare addition to your ABC collection.
