Rare Child's ABC Wild Animal Plate ~ Zebra

Early Child's Transferware Alphabet ABC Plate

ZEBRA

Powell and Bishop, Staffordshire England c. 1875

This rare child's alphabet mug or ABC plate dates to around 1875. Potted of earthenware pottery, the plate measures a diminutive 5 1/8" in diameter. Dark blue transfer printing outlined with two hand-painted rings of red. The central image is from a copperplate engraving (original by the French naturalist Buffon) of a zebra, and the alphabet is press moulded around the rim.

The plate is marked on the underside with the impressed Caudeus mark of Powell and Bishop, potteries makers in the Staffordshire region in the mid-19th century. Plates like this were made as gifts for good children, rewards of merit, and used to aid in the education of youngsters in the early to mid-19th century.

The plate is in great condition, with a very tight, short hairline at the 1 o'clock position, and no other cracks, lines, chips or repairs. Very little wear. Light overall crazing consistent with age. This fantastic little plate is a great example for a serious collector of wild animals.
