Rare Flow Blue Hand Painted Serving Tray
WHITE PERSIAN CATS
Grimwades (Royal Winton)
artist signed B.Austin
Stoke on Trent England c1920
This is a cat lovers’ dream come true, a gorgeous hand painted flow blue serving tray. Measuring 9 inches across, 10 inches including the moulded handles. Depicting a trio of long haired white Persian cats.
The monochromatic cat motif is a stunning portrait of the three felines with their personality shining through. The naive cats are encircled by a painted opaque cobalt flow blue curtain finished with a moulded gilt rim and handles.
The tray was made by the Grimwades pottery company in Stoke on Trent England. The company’s trade name became Royal Winton or Wintonware. The plate was rendered by resident artist B. Austin who signed it in the lower left. A hard to find pattern, the blue cats series was first produced around 1920 when house cats were all the rage. The tray is marked on the underside with the maker's globe backstamp, along with a retailers label from Ryrie Birks, a department store in Toronto Ontario Canada.
The tray is in spectacular condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Light glaze crazing consistent with age. Very minor utensil wear. This sturdy ironstone piece was impeccably decorated with a good deal of attention to detail and with an eye for cats
Flow Blue Cats are quite scarce and highly sought after. The tray will make a great addition to your cats or flow blue collection.
