Early Childs Transferware Tea Set ~ GOAT GIRL 1860 Staffordshire - image 1 of 16

Early Child's Green Pearlware Transferware Tea Set
Cork Edge & Malkin ~ Staffordshire, England c. 1860

This child's transferware tea set, circa 1860, was made by Cork Edge & Malkin, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England in the mid-19th century.

The set is decorated with a rich and earthy green transfer printed design. It features the scarce GOAT pattern (also known as "Goat Girl"), depicting a girl joyfully playing with her dancing pet goat. There is a manor house in the background with lush vegetation and a twisted loop border pattern. The image repeats on both sides of each piece.

The set is a “Bachelor Set’ made for one person. Made of an earthenware soft paste on a fancy blank with pedestal bases and fancy applied handles on the serving pieces. The set is comprised of: ~ TEAPOT WITH LID 4-1/2 inches tall ~ SUGAR WITH LID 3-1/2 inches tall ~ CREAM PITCHER 3 inches tall ~ WASTE BOWL 2-1/2 inches tall ~ and CUP 1-7/8 inches tall and SAUCER 5 inches in diameter.
The pieces in the set are unmarked. The pattern is discussed in Doris Lechler's English Toy China , Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the UK and US, and Petra Williams' Staffordshire Romantic Transfer Patterns.

The set is in good overall condition considering its age and prior use by generations of children. The teapot has a chip on the underside of the top edge and a fleabite on the edge of the spout. The edge of the teapot lid is flea bitten. The sugar has an old tight age line on the edge, and noteworthy patina (would likely come clean in a peroxide bath.) The edge of the sugar lid is likewise fleabitten. No other chips, cracks, or repairs. A slight firing split on the seam of the teapot (just beneath the handle) and other minor manufacturing imperfections, original to the making and typical of the childrens' wares of the period. Light overall glaze crazing and insignificant rim wear, consistent with age. Lots of life left in the set for display or for play by future generations. Sold as is, as shown.

Ever so hard to find an original nineteenth century childs tea set. It will make a noteworthy addition to your collection of children's dishes and a fine heirloom to be treasured by generations to come.
