Yellow Transfer Printed Brown Ware Child's Mug

This rare yellow printed brown ware mug stands 2-1/2 inches high and measures 2-1/4 inches across, excluding the applied handle. Made of dark brown earthenware (sometimes called Portobello Ware), transfer printed in canary yellow. Finished with pearlware glaze. The front of the mug displays a motto within a fancy floral reserve. The motto reads:

Remember this Your Parents Love; God will Reward you from Above

This special mug’s image come from copperplate engravings from an early educational child's primer and woodcuts in early illustrated school books. 

The mug is in very good condition. A flea bite glaze flake inside the top rim, another on the outside, and another teensy glaze flake on the foot rim. No chips cracks or repairs. Some minor scuffing on the beautifully executed transfer. A delightful example of primitive childrens toys from Georgian England. The mug is a delicious celebration of childhood.

The mug has no maker's mark. It was made in the Staffordshire region of England in the earliest part of the 19th century. Mugs like these some with the alphabet or moral maxims mottoes and expressions of love and affection were given as gifts for good children, rewards of merit and were used as early teaching tools and learning incentives. A very rare addition to your canary ware, childrens educational and ABC transferware collection. Sold as is, as shown.
