Leeds Green Feather Edge Pearlware Toy
Turkey Platter with Turkey
English c 1790
This is a rare miniature toy nursery ware platter with a feather edge rim and turkey in the middle. The tiny platter dates to around 1790-1800. It measures 3 1/2 inches long with a hand cut rim. A tiny doll sized press moulded turkey is slip or moulded into the center of the platter, standing an inch high. The platter is decorated with green shell edge and a pearlware glaze. The platter has an early rounded flat bottom.
The turkey platter made by one of the early English potters, possibly in Staffordshire or Leeds or other northern region in the late 18th or early 19th century. Judging by its size, it was well preserved from an impeccably potted miniature dolls dinner service with moulded food examples.
The platter is in very good condition with a couple of inconsequential fleabites along the edge and no other chips cracks or repairs. Glaze ponding, a tiny pit mark and other very minor firing marks. Perfectly wonderful, and in great condition considering its age and use as a childrens toy; offered as is, a great example of a very rare early edible motif, a fine style and lovely sentimental gift for Santa's favorite. Also listed is a companion pearlware platter with a moulded Christmas Goose.
