Staffordshire Childs Tea Service c1840 Dimmock Celtic Green Transferware

Child's Green Staffordshire

Transferware Tea Set

CELTIC

Thomas Dimmock Staffordshire, England c. 1840

This is a scarce miniature child's transferware tea set, circa 1840. The color of the set is a rich and earthy forest green, finished with a faint pearlware glaze.

These very early pieces are exact miniature versions of the adult-sized tea set made in the same pattern, with pedestal bases and fancy shaped handles and finials. The set is comprised of:

· TEAPOT with lid, 4" tall, 6" long;

· SUGAR with lid, 3 1/2" tall, 4" across;

· CREAMER, 2 1/2" tall on pedestal base;

· WASTE BOWL, 2 1/2" tall, 4 1/4" across top rim;

· FOUR CUPS, 2" tall; and

· FOUR SAUCERS, 4 1/2" in diameter, one with large chip.

The set is decorated in a classically beautiful Celtic pattern featuring a Celtic influenced infinity border and center sunburst. Many of the pieces from the set marked with the impressed monogram of Thomas Dimmock, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who made adult sized transfer printed wares from 1828 - 1859. He made only a few of these miniature tea sets. The pattern is not shown in Lechler or Punchard's reference books, but the blank is identical to Dimmock's Dimity pattern.

The set is in great condition. Stilt marks on the foot rims, original to the making. A small chip out of the tip of the teapot spout, fleabite inside the creamer's spout, little chippies inside the teapot and sugar lids and no other chips cracks or repairs. Very few of the usual minor imperfections (stray splotches of paint, glaze ponding, enlarged stilt marks) found in children's wares of this era, original to the making, adding to the authenticity and the naive charm. The set is in overall exceptional condition with only the flaws described above. We have attempted to be 100% accurate in listing the condition issues; if you require additional detailed information or more photos, please contact us. The condition is outstanding considering the age of the set and use by generations of children. Offered as is.

Miniature dinner sets and early table wares in early transferware patterns are hard to find and highly sought after in such great condition! We are also listing separately a companion dinner service in the same pattern but in blue. Either or both sets will make a stunning addition to any collection of children's dishes, and would also make a fantastic and unique doll house accessory.
