Mulberry Hopberry Childs Miniature Dinner Set c1840 Staffordshire Charles Meigh

Rare 44 piece Mulberry

Child's Dinner Service

Charles Meigh ~ Staffordshire, England c1840

This is a very scarce miniature dinner set made for childs play or to accessorize an elegant pre-Victorian dollhouse. The color of the set is a rich mulberry against a creamy earthenware (not porcelain) base, finished with pearlware glaze. The set is decorated with finely engraved hopberries and which look like oriental lanterns handing from branches and vines. The pattern is shown in both a miniature dinner service and matching tea set in Lorraine Punchards Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the UK.

The set was made by Charles Meigh, and esteemed pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire `Potteries' region of England in the early part of the 19th century. It is marked with a transfer printed flower, one of the rarer marks used by Meigh.

The set consists of 44 pieces. The set is in overall great condition with just a the one or two minor chips and crack as described below. The set is comprised of:

· 8 dinner plates (plus one with chip not shown in the photos), 3-3/4" in diameter;

· 6 soup plates, 3-3/4" in diameter;

· 6 luncheon plates, 3" in diameter;

· 5 side plates, 2-3/4" in diameter;

· 6 graduated platters, 4 1/2" – 5 3/4" long;

· Large covered tureen with lid on stand, 5" tall and 5-1/2" across;

· 2 Small covered tureens with lid on stand, 5" tall and 4 1/2" across;

· 2 open vegetable bowls 4" diameter with handles;

· 1 gravy pitcher 2" tall and 3 1/2" long, and

· Tall salad bowl or wine cooler, 2 1/4" tall, crack on one side and chipped on underside of rim.

As described, the set is in excellent condition. Stilt marks throughout, original to the making. Transfer wrinkles and other minor imperfections typical of the period. An extremely hard to find set, a perfect addition to an advanced collection of miniature transferware. A superb example of an early miniature dinner set particularly attractive to mulberry or flow blue collectors.
