Rare English Childs White Ironstone 35pc Dinner Set Charles Meigh 1840

Rare Childs White Ironstone 35pc Dinner Set Charles Meigh England 1840 WHITE STONE CHINA with GILT RIM Charles Meigh Staffordshire England c. 1840

This is a rare white ironstone miniature dinner service c1840. The set is pure white with gilding hand painted on the edges and trim, finished with pearlware glaze. The form of the set indicates an early period of children's pottery. Well made, to the standards usually only found in full-size Staffordshire table wares, the tiny set is an elegant mixture of formality and whimsy. An identical set is illuatrated on page 129 of Lorraine Punchard's book `Playtime Pottery & Porcelain (UK/US)'.

The set is comprised of 35 pieces:

- One tureen with lid and undertray that stands 4" tall to the top of the loop finial. It measures 4 1/2" across the mid section, with moulded handles and scalloped rim. The undertray measures 4 1/2" in diameter with moulded handles at each end;

- Two covered vegetable servers, 2 1/2" tall and 4 1/2" in diameter, one with an appropriate make do base from the same set;

- Two gravy pitchers, 3 1/4" long, 2" tall;

- Octagonal platter, 5 3/8" long, 3 1/2" wide, flat bottom;

- Six side plates, 3 1/16" in diameter, flat bottom;

- Five pie plates, 3 1/4" in diameter, flat bottom;

- Five soup plates, 3 3/4" in diameter, flat bottom;

- Eight dinner plates, 3 3/4" in diameter, flat bottom; and

- Extra undertray (would fit a large toy tureen).

The set is marked `Opaque Porcelain', the early name for ironstone. The set was made by Charles Meigh, a well known pottery maker in the Staffordshire region of England from the period of 1820-1860.

The set is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs other than a tiny age line at the inside rim of the tureen base. A few dots of kiln dust, stilt marks and other typical firing imperfections, original to the making and typical of the period. A great little toy dinner set to display in the finest ceramic collection or dollhouse! The tiny pieces are doll sized works of art, suitable for display and play.
