Rare Childs 20pc Tea Set ~ Little Mae Girl Cat Dog Pets Allerton c1890
TEA FOR FIVE TEA SET
LITTLE MAE WITH PETS
Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England circa 1890
This is a child's transferware "tea for five" tea set, circa 1900. The set was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The color of the set is a rich blue green teal, sometimes called marine blue. The combination of color and form make this set scarce if not rare.
The set is in the round shape with scalloped rims, and includes:
TEAPOT 5 1/2" tall SUGAR WITH LID 4 1/2" tall CREAM PITCHER 3 1/2" tall FIVE CUPS 2" tall SIX SAUCERS 4 1/4" in diameter, and SIX CAKE PLATES 5 1/2" in diameter
The tea set features a little girl sitting in a doorway with a cat in her lap and another kitten drinking milk from a bowl while a dog watches eagerly from beside her. A bird can be seen watching from above. This endearing scene is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds, a cherub or putti and lots of geometrical whimsies.
Some of the pieces are unmarked; others are marked with pattern number 106741 and with a British Registration number 780, and others are marked simply "Staffordshire England". The set was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical childrens tea sets.
The set is in great condition with no cracks, chips, staining or repairs to any of the pieces. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The teapot has a firing separation inside the spout and around the handle; the transfers are not aligned neatly, there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge frits original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the authenticity and folksy charm.
The set is just wonderful, a perfect gift for your favorite child or your favorite grownup! Childrens aesthetic transferware in this bright and earthy color are hard to find and highly sought after in such great condition, especially in this whimsical pattern. This will make a stunning addition to your collection of children's dishes.
