Rare Brownhills ABC Childrens Clock ~ Rupert & Spot 1880

This 7 1/8" childs plate has a crisp image transfer printed in rich Van Dyke brown with great rare three color polychrome hand painting, clobbering in shades of cherry red, golden yellow, lime green.

This transfer, rarely seen on the market, will be a special abc plate in your collection. It shows the letters of the alphabet transferred on the inner rim, surrounded by a clock with roman numerals around the perimeter, the classic Brownhills decorative transfer for learning to tell time and read. The central image is of a baby boy named Rupert crawling into a barn while his big pet dog named Spot watches.

The plate is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. The usual stilt marks and minor transfer skip at the letter P. The plate was made by the Brownhills Pottery Co in Staffordshire England circa 1880. It is marked with the pattern name “Childrens Clock” with registration number 253083 and the maker’s initials BP Co. It has an impressed “Ivory 97” mark, indicating the color of the underglaze.

Plates like these were given as gifts to children on special occasions and were used as educational tools, as well. An outstanding addition to your ABC collection.
