Pearlware Child's Mug ~ ELLEN 1840
ELLEN
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1840
This is outstanding child's transferware mug is circa 1840. This diminutive piece stands 2 7/8" tall x 2 3/4" wide with an applied loop handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a blue ponding of a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in dark brown with a horizontal swath with the name Ellen surrounded by a plethora of colored flowers and vines.
The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit as well as Christening mugs.
The condition of this exceptional mug is great. Nicely potted and the transfers were applied with a good deal of attention to detail. It is amazing that this little piece was made for a child so long ago, evidently in a cabinet for the last 170 years!
