Victorian Flow Blue Aesthetic Transferware Child's Cup Saucer and Plate Set
LITTLE MAY WITH APRONFUL OF EGGS
Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1890
This antique child's transferware tea set trio, circa 1890, was originally part of a complete children's tea set or doll's set. The cup stands 2” tall, the saucer measures about 4 ½” and the plate measures about 5 1/2" in diameter. The decoration is transfer printed in flow blue, a rich cobalt blue which flows into and through the pattern, as it should.
The set depicts a homely little girl named May or Mae standing in front of farmhouse wearing a dress, a floppy hat, and an apron. She is holding up the front of her apron which appears to be filled with eggs. An endearing scene of country life, one of May's socks is falling down and she has a subtle smile on her have! The central image is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers and a floral leaf border.
The set was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The pattern name is "MAY". The plate and saucer is marked with the pattern name and Allerton's pattern number 753 in a belt-shaped cartouche. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic.
The set is in great condition, with no chips cracks or repairs except for a nibble on the rim of the cup. An enlarged craze line on the back of the plate which does not go through to the front, and stilt marks and other typical manufacturing imperfections original to the making and not visible from the front except upon close examination. No chips cracks or repairs. Stilt marks stray wisps of paint and glaze ponding in the border, all typical minor manufacturing imperfections, original to the making. The set displays beautifully. A great example of naive and whimsical early wares!
