Rare Childs Caricature Plate ~ Velocipede Bicycle Geese

Child's Green Transferware Plate

COUNTRY PARTY ~ VELOCIPEDE

Staffordshire, England c. 1820

This is an amusing child's transferware plate dating to the early-19th century. The plate measures 6 1/4" in diameter with a press moulded flower orange-caramel lustre border and scalloped edge.

The plate is transfer printed in green. The central image depicts a dandy gent on a velocipede or bicycle with his pet parrot on the handlebars being chased by three geese. The velocipede is being propelled by the rider's feet. Riding these steerable two wheeled " hobby horses " was all the rage for men and women starting in 1818 when the contraption was patented in France. Hobby horse riding schools became very popular for the upper class, and hobby riding became a popular subject for caricaturists. The plate is titled "A COUNTRY PARTY".

Condition of the plate is very good with no chips, cracks, or repairs. A stilt mark in the well of the plate, original to the making. Very light glaze crazing consistent with age. Displays beautifully! An outstanding example of a rare plate.

Plates and cups like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their young imaginations. The image on this plate is shown on a similar plate in Noel Riley's book "Gifts for Good Children", page 176, figure 663. The plate is unmarked; other similar plates are marked with the backstamp of potter Thomas Brough at Lane End c1818-1822. The winsome imagery of this plate is especially sought after on children's ABC and other wares, and a great collectible for bicycle enthusiasts. We have listed 2 other velocipede plates to mix and match.
