Rare Childs Caricature Plate ~ Velocipede Bicycle Flute

Child's Brown Transferware Plate

SUMMER STYLE ~ VELOCIPEDE

Staffordshire, England c. 1820

This is an amusing child's transferware plate dating to the early-19th century. The plate measures 6 1/4" in diameter with a press moulded flower orange-caramel lustre border and scalloped edge.

The plate is transfer printed in brown. The central image depicts a lady on a velocipede or bicycle while playing a flute. The velocipede is being propelled by the rider's feet. Riding these steerable two wheeled " hobby horses " was all the rage for men and women starting in 1818 when the contraption was patented in France. Hobby horse riding schools became very popular for the upper class, and hobby riding became a popular subject for caricaturists. The plate is titled "SUMMER STYLE".

Condition of the plate is very good with 1/4" shallow flake on the edge at 3 o'clock, a nibble on the back rim and no other chips, cracks, or repairs. Stilt marks in the border of the plate, original to the making. Very light glaze crazing consistent with age. Displays beautifully! An outstanding example of a rare plate.

Plates and cups like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their young imaginations. The image on plate is shown in Noel Riley's book "Gifts for Good Children" on page 176 figure 661. The plate is unmarked; other similar plates are marked with the backstamp of potter Thomas Brough at Lane End c1818-1822. The winsome imagery of this plate is especially sought after on children's ABC and other wares, and a great collectible for bicycle enthusiasts. We have listed 2 other velocipede plates to mix and match.
