"Bang! Went Sixpence" was a catch phrase popularized by Harry Lauder in the early 1900s. It is written on the back of the hat of Royal Doulton's Auld Mac character mug as the mug was inspired by the Scotsman Mac in one of Harry's songs.

This beautiful Toby or Character mug by Royal Doulton features this old man "Mac" with green hat and grey beard, wrinkled, smirking, character filled face in bright and clear hand painted colors. The rosy cheeks make me wonder if he's had a wee nip at the Scotch.

The base of the mug is marked with the Royal Doulton mark and the number D5824 as well as the characters name Auld Mac. This is a 3" mug. My research indicated this piece was introduced in 1940. In excellent condition it has no chips, nicks, cracks or crazing.
