Antique Sterling Ring Box - American

This pretty little ring box dates to the turn of the 20th century and is among the rare few of that was actually made in the USA. Most of these gorgeous little ring boxes came from England or Canada.

The box is a cube in shape with rounded corners and a slightly pillowed top. It measures 1 1/8" or 30mm in each direction.

The box is simple with just a single scoring near the outside perimeter and another in the center with a small embellishment forming the blank cartouche (and ready for your own personalization, should you wish.) Push button lock.

The interior fitting is unique and this style was only made for a brief period from the late 19th through the start of the 20th century. the ring is meant to 'almost' lie down as that of a graceful flower. It doesn't actually touch the bottom of the velvet - or the top of the case (padded and upholstered in cream silk satin) but is held floating by the particular fitting of the ring holder at the rear of the case. A quite beautiful presentation with the 'round' of the ring juxtaposing the squared shape of the box. In this case the lining is a beautiful royal purple velvet.

*** To use this box to present a ring it must be no more than 1 inch from bottom to top and it also works best with a traditional width shank. The width of the ring is less important since most rings are well less than 1" east to west. The ring I've shown inside the box measures exactly 1" top to bottom (is a size 6.5) has a 3mm wide shank (just about 1/8").

CONDITION: In overall very good antique condition. Extruding piano hinge (correct for the period) keeps the top securely in place. Push button spring lock remains fully functional. Although the Maker (who's name escapes me a this moment) took the time and expense to Patent their design, very few were made before the company merged with another and then was sold twice more - to be eventually taken over by Gorham - who sadly never did make these boxes!

Your box will come cleaned (we try to avoid reflections by not cleaning before photographing - but as you can see, it doesn't really work that well!) It will also be in a velvet and satin pouch so you can stick it in your pocket and pull it out for the surprise presentation exactly when it's the right time for you.
