Rare American Sterling Silver Ring Box - Art Deco
This beautiful Art Deco sterling ring box features simple and edgy lines with a black velvet interior ring holder.
I've not come across this design before. The lines are clean and somewhat architectural and we date it to the 30's. The box measures 2.25" w x 2" d x 1.5" h. It was constructed for the ring to sit forward and will accommodate a maximum of 29mm top to bottom (just under 1 1/6") and was made by Frank Scholfield Co in Baltimore for the jeweler La Reine.
* Beginning near the end of the 19th century, these beautiful sterling boxes were given as gifts to privileged brides to house the Diamond engagement rings purchased from elitist Jewelery Shops. Fine Jewelers in Britain had been making boxes for their clients since the 3rd quarter, 19th century and Canada followed soon after when Ryrie Brothers (of British origin) introduced them. The boxes were a clever marketing tool, and quickly become a trend in Canada. First Ryrie, then Ellis and finally Birks (all three eventually merged into the company known as BIRKS today)offered them. Later Mappins & a few others tried to cash in on the trend. None of the jewelers actually made their own boxes. They were contracted out to be made by private label for them primarily in England and Canada. A small fraction were manufactured in the US and the trend never really caught on in America. When silver prices rose, most jewelers stopped giving these out. A few started using silver plated replicas instead, but somehow the cache was lost and sometime after the mid 20th century the practice was just a memory of the good old days. Today all these little beauties are collected, and the American made boxes are especially sought after since they are the most scarce. Gentlemen purchase these pieces to present their Engagement Rings in; ladies are collecting them like mad - and today, another 'new' trend has been reborn!
