CARTIER Solid 14K Gold Pen, Ballpoint

This stunning basket weave patterned pen is solid 14K and was purchased at Cartier, New York.

Most of the pens sold at Cartier and Tiffany in the mid 20th century were made for them by fine pen makers in America. This was one of them, bearing the typical Cartier clip of the period.

Measuring 5.5" long, it has a wonderful heft at 29 grams (without the insert) - and it writes like a dream. It's been sitting on my desk for a couple of weeks now and I've resisted listing it in favor of keeping it for myself (but I'm well known to leave my pens lying around wherever I last use them, rarely finding them again.) Anyway, here it is and if I weaken and decide in favor of keeping it before it is sold - then it then it may become my 2014 birthday present to me!

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition with just the lightest historic wear and no damage to note. Cartier German refill inside the full length caged spring. M T C engraved on the clip. Weight by scale: 29 grams. Acid tested to 14K (solid, not cased.) Circa, mid 20th century.

Our fine gold accessories are always beautifully presented and shipped at no charge to our clients.

* During the 50's Cartier New York began selling solid gold pens and other luxury accessories. They remained the rage through most of the 60's until, with the 2 tiered pricing system in place allowing gold prices to fluctuate it climbed to over a now laughable $41 an ounce, and we began to see the end of gold personal accessories. It does seem funny that in 2011 when gold hit nearly $2000 an ounce, only then did Cartier decide on re-introducing gold pens (well, just a few) at prices reaching into five figures!
