Incredible Micromosaic Beetle Pendant, 18K Etruscan Mount, 19th C

Large and impressive the pendant hangs 2.75" from the top of the decorative bale to the bottom of the hand crafted solid tubular fringe. It is 1.25" wide.

The mosaic itself is comprised of a super tiny white glass tile (tesserae) background while the beetle is comprised using several types of iridescent and sheer glass pieces. It is amazingly dimensional & realistic.

The Castellani family were famous for their achievement in micromosaic work using the tiny glass tesserae fitted together like miniature jigsaw puzzles to create their subject matter. From about 1860 they particularly favored subjects like doves, amphorae and the Egyptian inspired beetle. The mount also screams Castellani Etruscan Revival in every way, exhibiting their mastery of fine granulation (tiny applied gold beads) the decorative patterning of corded wire work, filigree scrolls and the surmounts of circular discs. The mount bears no marks but we are convinced it has come out of this workshop.

While micromosaic pieces are certainly aplenty in a myriad of subject matters with tesserae of all sizes and from various periods, they cannot be compared to pieces of this quality which are highly desirable and rarely come available in the marketplace.

CONDITION: Overall excellent antique condition. Glazed memento compartment (verso) is lined in the original purple silk. We have not opened the compartment, but the silk appears to have held up beautifully. This pendant did not come to us with a chain. It is shown (for safety purposes only) on a newer (and unimpressive) 18K snake chain. If, like us you have no perfect chain at the moment, you are welcome to this one which will work in a pinch and allow you to wear it until you have a chance to hunt down 'the right one.' High carat bloomed gold (tested), circa 1860's, Italy.

* We have shot this with a view to show you every detail, but in so doing we have lost the nuance, vivid iridescence and magical sheerness in the wings. This piece is so much more captivating to the eye than what our camera work conveys.
