This elaborate frame features a repousse dog on each side within the central cartouche with outstretched Putti side guards, roses over trellis shell finishing details all heavily embossed and engraved throughout.
The frame has sew holes so it will easily attach to a fine and deserving purse. It has never been unused and my guess is that it was purchased on a trip to India or possibly Thailand.
The finished (exterior) dimensions are 6.25" wide x 3" high (excluding the top push button closure. Interior width is just over 5" sew hole to sew hole and about 2" high. It comes with articulated heavy rings which appear to be a different kind of metal than the purse and are meant to attach a carrying strap or chain.
The frame does not hold a sterling acid test for more than a few seconds before beginning to break down - but it is not plated so a lower grade of silver content - perhaps the continental 825. Unused but not new. We acquired it from a private collection where it has been as far as I know for many years. I am uncertain as to any prior history - if any. I mention this only because there is absolutely no tarnish or odor on the frame which is usually the case with very high grade silver (950-980) so actual the metal content is a mystery to me!
CONDITION: As new. Difficult to date this piece, but certainly somewhere in the 20th century. A very nice solid heft (too heavy for my jewelry scale to handle.
