An astonishingly vivid, ruby red Pyrope Garnet brooch that can also be worn as a spectacular pendant.
This is a bold and beautiful set piece constructed in 5 layers building to the large centerpiece gemstone. I've lost count at something over 100 larger and smaller Garnets that make up this quite complicated piece.
The mount tests to silver and contains a glazed compartment verso. The Garnets themselves have black patina claws which make them near invisible and leave the gemstones the total focus of the piece. The claws are purported to be 9 carat gold but we have have not attempted to test them for fear of disturbing the patina.
This gorgeous piece measures 2"high (excluding the drop down hanging bale) x 1.5" wide. It builds to a depth of .50" at the centerpiece.
CONDITION: Very fine antique condition. One Garnet is a replacement. Very light expected historic wear. Original broaching assembly remains fully functional. Garnets are Rose Cuts and in 3 (possibly 4) different sizes. Age related tarnish under the glaze has been cleaned by our antique jeweler. Weight by scale: 11.3 grams. No Markings. Country of origin is unknown.
Worn as a brooch, this is impressive - and as a pendant against bare skin, it is regal and elegant. If Garnets are your thing, this is definitely worth a second look!
