An exquisite box from the late 18th-early 19th century comprised on hand carved Rosewood, polished to a high finish and then lacquer finished with some form of early shellac. Sold to us as a Snuff Box, there was no residue of it. I think it more likely was used for wooden matches or possibly to store hand rolled cigarettes.
There is an inlaid word which the Dealer selling us this reads to be Karlsbad. The "s" appears as a modern "o" to my eye.
The box was clearly treasured and remains in remarkably fine condition. On close inspection you will see the expected aging in the inlaid Agate - no damage, but natural, age appropriate wear.
From the overall finesse, quality of the carving, inlay and the silver strapping, this piece is absolutely superb and deserves to be in a carefully chosen and discriminating box collection!
Measuring 3.25" x 2.25" it stands 1.25" high.
CONDITION: Superb antique condition with absolutely no damage or losses to note. Hinged top opens and closes at it should. The wood is beautifully shaped with softened edging & very thick. This piece is solid with a nice heft at 96.7 grams. Wood, silver, mosaic Agate inlay, polychrome.
