The title describes this perfectly! A very well carved 19th century lava cameo depicting a Bacchante is unusually refined for Lava - and in exquisite detail. Definitely not one of the tourista carvings of the day, this was laborious and executed by a fine craftsman. She is shown donning the grape leaves in her hair, wearing a beaded necklace or pearls and a pendant. She is front facing and carved as a full bust.
The mount is also a work of art. Set with 6 natural Blue Sapphires and 12 natural Silver Gulf Pearls, it serves to adorn - but overpower the cameo in any way. A solid mount as can be seen from the back, it was hand crafted of high carat yellow gold (testing to a minimum of 18K.)
The finished piece measures 1 7/8" high x 1 5/8" wide and is just under 1/2" in depth. The color of the Lava is natural putty.
CONDITION: Superb antique condition with no damage, losses, repairs or worn areas to note. Carved in refined detail and wonderful, life-like dimension with careful attention to every aspect. Custom crafted mount is collet set with 6 earth mined, faceted Blue Sapphires and 12 natural Pearls. Original c clasp broaching assembly with attached safety chain. Provenance: from a private collection. Weight by scale: 25.8 grams. Mount tests to at least 18K yellow gold. Cameo is 19th Century, Italian. Custom crafted Mount is likely French.
