Victorian Swivel Brooch The Vagabond Boy 1860

The story of the Vagabond Boy likely was made popular by Charles Dickens story of Oliver Twist.A vagabond in Victorian England was a wanderer ,or a tramp. This was the time of poor houses and although sad this a romantic tale indeed.Robert Louise Stephenson might also have been thought of as a Vagabond as he spent most of his life as a wanderer in the South Seas.

This is a c1860 Victorian swivel brooch made to hold a lock of hair.(I have removed the hair) and is also noted to be mourning jewellery. The Vagabond boy is painted on porcelain.See page 190 Collecting Victorian Jewelry C.Jeanenne Bell,G.G.

The brooch measures 2 inches by 1 1/2 inches.
