This is not your average walnut Victorian marble top dresser. The tall, shapely mirror has a boldly carved crest with a cluster of grapes suspended from acanthus leaves. On either side of the mirror are delicate half-round candle shelves with small applied burled walnut panels above and below. Notice the 2 small hand-dovetailed glove boxes on either side. A unique feature is the original marble which is inset inside the dresser base. The marble is in excellent condition. Below is one narrow drawer over 2 larger drawers. The top drawer has a bird's eye maple interior with 3 small compartments and one large. The 2 lower drawers have interiors made of cherry. The use of cherry and bird's eye maple as a secondary wood is a direct indication of quality furniture in this era. All the hand dovetailed drawers have carved wooden pulls and intricately carved wooden key escutcheons. All have their original locks as well. Look closely and you will see the hidden drawer located at the bottom of the base. These were referred to as slipper drawers. The dresser has lovely curved sides with applied panels of burled walnut. The dresser rests on its original casters. The finish is original and in excellent condition having a very desirable color and patina. The mirror is original and has a fair amount of silver loss. We can arrange to replace the mirror if desired, but we find it appealing. 91"h X 53"w X 23.5"d, Condition: Excellent, Circa: 1860-1870's.
