Walnut Victorian 2 Door Bookcase with Large Bowed Base
This unusual walnut Victorian bookcase was obviously custom made. The cabinet comes apart in 2 pieces for ease in transporting. The arched top doors have applied burled walnut panels above. The doors retain their original glass and locks. Inside, the 3 adjustable shelves measure 9.5" deep. The coolest part of the bookcase is its base. Notice how it significantly steps out with a bowed front. There are 2 large raised panels on top. Was this designed for seating? If so, how clever! The base has 2 very deep bowed front drawers with their original locks and beautifully cast brass pulls. Notice the inset burled walnut panels in the center of the drawers. Each panel has a delicate incised floral carving highlighted in gold. Now check out the burled panels on the sides and the front skirt of the base. Each has a unique incised carved design. This would make a wonderful china cabinet as well, in which large plates, etc. could be stored in the deep drawers. The finish is in very good to excellent condition. 78.5"h X 51"w X 29"d, Condition: Excellent, Circa: 1870's.
