Henry Varnum Poor Oil Painting "The River Valley"

A wonderful, varied landscape scene by Henry Varnum Poor titled "The River Valley". Oil on canvas, signed lower right. Dimensions: 18" x 24" (unframed); 23.5" x 29.5" (framed).

Henry Varnum Poor (1888-1970) is best known for figure studies, landscapes, portraits and murals. Poor was born in Kansas in 1888, graduated from Stanford University in 1910 and then traveled to London and studied with Walter Sickert at the Slade School. In Paris he studied with Lucien Simon and Laurens at Académie Julian. He was a National Academy of Design member and exhibited nationwide as early as 1912.

Poor returned to California and taught at Stanford and the CSFA from 1916 to 1919. He made his final move to NYC in 1921 where he was successful as a potter as well as a painter. He died in New York City, NY in November 1970.
