c1910 Hand Colored Chinese Parrots Grill Plate (Maestricht, Holland)

Nice 11 inch (diameter) three-part divided Grill Plate by the Societe Ceramique, Maestricht with colorful Chinese garden scenes and parrots from the 1890 to 1930 period. There are four plates available with all in excellent condition. Each plate has hand painted overglaze coloring used to highlight the underglaze printed patterns. The workmanship is superb and the overglaze color palette follows the traditional famille rose colors of the mid 1700s (i.e., watery green, translucent blue green, medium orange, deep iron red (ocher red), a strong pinkish-rose that becomes opaque in its thickest application, and a blue that ranges from translucent to almost opaque. The outer edge along the rim is decorated with a band of brownish-tan luster much like the dead-leaf brown luster rim bands painted along the rim edges of Chinese export blue and white plates in the 18th century. The chinoiserie garden scenes on these plates are very reminiscent of the hand colored oriental prints widely popularized by many Staffordshire potteries in the 1830s and 1840s on pearlware and ironstone. The grill plates listed here are, of course from five to eight decades later.

There are four grill plates available and the price shown here is for one plate. If you purchase more than one plate, the additional plates will be shipped for free to US mainland addresses which offers a nice added savings (email me for quotes on shipping if you live outside the US). And as note above, these two grille plates date from the 1890 to 1930 period although some sources have assigned the Maestricht mark printed on the back of them to as early as 1887 (e.g., Kovel and Kovel 1986: Page 56, Mark M). The Société Céramique factory at Maestricht (also spelled as Maastricht by some collectors) first started producing pottery in 1863. If you collect grill plates, divided plates, chop plates or large decorative hand painted plates and chargers, then you may certainly want to purchase one or more of these visually appealing and colorful plates while they are still available. The vast majority of early divided grill plates on the market today are monochrome and far less colorful or interesting. Consequently, these two grill plates will certainly capture attention in most any setting. Also, each of the plates comes with a full satisfaction guarantee or return the lot for a refund (see return policy below for full details, certain shipping costs & fees are nonrefundable).

SIZE: Each plate measure about 11 1/8 inches across (diameter) and stands about 1 inch tall right along its outer rim edge. As such, these plates are larger than a standard table plate so that each of the three compartments can hold a reasonable portion. Their larger size makes each plate perfect for displaying along a wall or counter, on a shelf, or in among a group of decorative hand painted and printed plates.

CONDITION: All of the grill plates are in excellent condition and have no chips, cracks, hairlines, star cracks, major scratches, repairs or restorations. Wear in present but its is not readily visible since it is restricted to the underside and along the shoulder and base of each plate. The overglaze hand coloring is more than 99.9% intact with just a couple of utensil scratches on the front of each plate that are not noticeable unless inspected up close under strong light. The only other declaration to mention are some small pinhead to match-head size minor stains along the divides of two of the plate (see last photo which shows three such light stains along the raised divide of one plate). Beyond that, the plates are essentially perfect and their glaze is shiny and bright with absolutely no crazing. A better set of four hand painted and transfer printed grill plates would be hard to find today without paying a lot more than what is offered here.

SHIPPING: All US mainland buyers pay $11.80 for well packed and insured USPS Parcel Post for one plate (this is an estimated savings of about $1 to $4 since insurance is also INCLUDED in the above quoted amount for all mainland US addresses). A buyer living within the Continental US will pay no additional USPS shipping fees over the initial $11.80 when purchasing two, three or all four of these plates to be shipped at the same time! If you live in Texas or in an adjacent state, simply email me for a revised quote on mailing just one. A faster shipping option is also available, too (see shipping section below for Priority Mail option). No handling or packing fees are ever charged and fragile items will be double boxed for maximum protection. All international buyers will pay only the exact shipping costs for all verifiable locations outside the continental US mainland. Please note that import duties, taxes and other charges are not included in the item price or shipping costs and these additional charges are the Buyer's responsibility. We do offer a petition for VAT relief on the behalf of the buyer which may help reduce certain import taxes should your country allow such petitions for items over 100 years old. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to purchasing this item -- thanks.

RETURN POLICY: Satisfaction and peace of mind are guaranteed for all Docs Antiques Ruby Lane listings -- please refer directly to our Service Pledge and our Return Policy for full details. And this means that if you are unhappy with your purchase, then you may return it by sending the item back undamaged and post marked within seven days of original receipt for a refund (certain shipping costs are non-refundable; if purchasing more than one plate then the group is sold as a lot). Items damaged during shipping are covered by insurance and while this rarely happens because we double box, we will gladly help you file your insurance claim should it ever be necessary (to date, we have had only two claims for damage from shipping in over eight years). Of course, never send an item back that was damaged by shipping since that will void the original insurance. Instead, contact us for help and we will gladly assist.

PAYMENT OPTIONS: We accept checks on US Banks (no temporary checks, all checks must have 9 digit routing code; item ships after check fully clears), USPS money orders, PayPal or contact us with your verified address for more options. If you wish to use a credit card by way of Paypal, that option becomes available after you submit a Ruby Lane purchase order (see Terms of Sale for additional information). Once submitted, a PayPal icon will appear at the bottom of this listing and then you may proceed from there if you wish to pay via Paypal. Thanks for looking and do come back and visit again when you have the time.
