c1835 Staffordshire Gaudy Blue Two-Handled Loving Cup with Japanese Garden Motif

Antique transitional creamware gaudy blue loving cup with an oriental garden motif in underglaze red from about 1835. This is an interesting minimalist rendition of probably a gaudy Welsh pattern variant where much of the overglaze gold, green, orange and yellow decoration was left off. The transfer printed decoration consists of simple line outlines of flowers, leaves, vines, hedges and architectural panels in underglaze red with some parts hand painted and filled with underglaze dark cobalt blue (see all photos). The pattern projects a foreshadowing of the Japanese aesthetic movement that eventually occurred some 40 years after this cup was produced. The blue and red motifs are on both the front and back of the cup with the most detailed section signifying the main face. Two-handled cups like this one were produced for commemorating marriages, births, special events, etc. The commemorative names, places and dates were added in overglaze enamels and in this case along with the additional colorful enameling of the flowers and leaves.

There is no overglaze decoration on this cup and no use of gold or copper luster, either. The simple blue and red underglaze colors is all there is for decoration. Still, this minimal decoration is pleasantly accented by the transitional cream-colored body which is covered by a slightly greenish-blue clear glaze. In fact, the interior of the cup projects a late creamware hue (see photos). The cup's simple cylindrical shape is also accented with a sharp cordoned band at the base just about a protruding foot. Two angular handles complete the cup. There are no makers names or impressed marks on the base of the cup and except for the number `5' printed in purplish red (see photos). This cup is a nice example of Staffordshire from the 1820 to 1850 that is in excellent condition and will capture attention in most any setting. And as always, this loving cup a also comes with my Docs Antiques `no fault' satisfaction guarantee or you may return it using my return policy for a refund. (see return policy for full details farther below, certain shipping costs & fees are nonrefundable).

SIZE: This cup has a rim diameter of 3 15/16 inches and a base diameter of 4 1/4 inches. It stands about 3 7/8 inches tall and has a maximum width from handle to handle of 6 1/4 inches across. It is a perfect size for displaying on a shelf or mantle, out in the open or in a china cabinet and will capture interest in most any setting.

CONDITION: This cup is in excellent condition. It has no chips, cracks, hairlines, star cracks, stains, major scratches, repairs or restorations. There are also no major production flaws or glaze scars caused by kiln furniture used to seat the cup during firing. The glaze is shiny and bright and has no crazing. Another example in this same pattern, but in better condition would simply not be easy to find.

Of course, never send an item back that was damaged by shipping since that will void the original insurance. Instead, contact us for help and we will gladly assist.
