Fine antique Persian Islamic polychrome tin glazed Qajar pottery candlestick. It is hand thrown on a potter's wheel and styled after much older brass and silver candlesticks. This candlestick style is called a mid-stem drip pan and it was originally common in Western Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries in cast brass (see last photo for an example of a cast brass mid-stem drip pan "Heemskirk" candlestick for comparison only that is not for sale). Only the Qajar pottery candlestick shown in the other eight photos is for sale here. The dish-shaped pan located midway on the stem has a crimped or wavy edge and functioned to catch wax dripping down from the burning candle.
The pottery candlestick listed here dates from about 1850 or possible up to 50 years later (c1900). It is a nice example capturing a much older, relic form of a candlestick that became obsolete after self-consuming candlewicks along with slower burning wax were perfected in the 1700s. This is the first Qajar pottery example of a mid-pan candlestick that I have encountered. Persian Isnik / Iznik candlesticks are also rare, too, and any examples would have the same high temperature bright colors as the colors on this candlestick. The short wax candle shown in some of the photos is not included in this sale (you are only purchasing the Qajar candlestick).
This candlestick may have originally has a metal foot since the current base is oddly constructed with a curving outer edge and no foot ring (see all photos). The candlestick is covered with a noticeably thick tin glaze that is weakly opaque, coarsely crazed and covers a light yellowish-buff clay body. The clay body is slightly sandy and has small dark mineral inclusions (visible at the one chipped area). The candlestick is decorated with hand painted flowers, floral sprigs and geometric dots and bands. The colors include light and dark blue, purple, light green, dark green, and black. The candle-socket has a nice lip and also correctly mimics brass candle-sockets of the 1600s and 1700s since it is cylindrical in profile rather than expanding or tulip shaped. The stem has large transitional tear-drop to ball shaped knops which again are more typical of the mid 1600s (and older) than subsequent stem styles. And so if you collect middle eastern pottery or interesting candlestick forms, then you may certainly want to purchase this example while it is still available. This candlestick also comes with a full satisfaction guarantee or return it for a refund (see return policy below for full details, certain shipping costs & fees are nonrefundable).
SIZE: This candlestick stands about 8 1/2 inches tall and has a base with a diameter of about 3 1/4 inches across. The mid-stem pan has a diameter of about 3 1/2 inches across. It is a nice size for displaying on a table, mantle, bureau, shelf, out in the open or in a special cabinet.
CONDITION: This pottery candlestick has just one small chip located along the outer crimped edge of its mid-stem pan. The chip is about 3/8 long by less than 1/4 wide (see photo with red pen pointing to chip). And as noted, its base may have once been encased with a metal outer rim, however, the candlestick displays perfectly fine as the photos illustrate (see all photos). Beyond the one small chip noted above, this candlestick has no other chips and no cracks, hairlines, star cracks, stains, major scratches, repairs or restorations. The thick glaze is coarsely crazed and this feature is a common characteristic of Qajar pottery. The glaze is shiny and the colorful decoration very attractive. Antique Persian candlesticks like this example are very hard to find today especially in this traditional mid-pan form.
