Old candlestick hand made from thin copper sheets with nice accent banding and single knop from the 1890 to 1930 period or earlier. This candlestick has a weighted base and is hand crafted from six flat pieces of sheet copper. It dates from the Arts & Crafts period or possibly even a decade or two earlier and weighs about 2 lbs mainly because its heavy base (filled with sand or pot metal). The central 5.5 inches of the main stem of the stick is made by forming a tube from a flat sheet of copper that was then soldered together leaving a silvery vertical seam (the seventh photo has a blue arrow made of tape pointing to the soldered seam). The flaring candle socket (a fixed bobeche) is also made from one piece of copper that has been folded over the upper segment of the shaft leaving a visible crimped seam under the flaring rim (see photos). The top 1.5 inches of the stick is made from a single unseamed piece of copper that was shaped into a cylinder with two accent rings and then inserted into the upper section of the main portion of the stem.
As already noted, the main portion of the stem consists of a 5.5 inch long seamed piece of sheet copper worked into a perfect round cylinder with fine accent bands near each end. The lower section of this main stem segment is inserted into a large rounded knop. The large knop connects and joins the stem to the base. The base is weighted and made from two pieces of copper (a rounded top piece, a concave bottom piece that also overlaps the top and forms a dry seam along the top outer edge of the base. The underside of base has been tinned. This tin coating on the underside reminds me of the tin coating placed on the inside copper pans from the 1800s. Consequently, this candlestick could very well be older than 1890 and I'll leave it up to the future owner to decide that issue. There are no makers marks on the candlestick and only the remnant of an old cloth adhesive tag that had a family name on it but has since been lost in the transition. If I find the tag, I'll add the name to the info here. In summary, this is a nice hand made from sheet copper candlestick that will add charm and warmth to any room. Unlike some modern technology, this candlestick still works perfectly when the electricity goes off so long as you keep a candle in it (as shown in the photos, no candle is included). And as always, this candlestick also comes with a full satisfaction guarantee or return it for a refund (see return policy below for full details, certain shipping costs & fees are nonrefundable).
SIZE: This candlestick stands 10 1/4 inches tall and has a base with a diameter of about 5 inches. The open candle socket has an inner diameter of 1 inch and extends down for about 1 1/4 inches. The underside of the base is concave upward about 1/2 inches to create a footring that is about 1/4 inches wide on which the stick sits flat. The candlestick is the perfect size for displaying on a shelf, along a mantle, on a table top out in the open or in a corner cabinet.
CONDITION: This candlestick has no cracks, dark stains, major scratches, repairs or restorations. The only declaration to mention that keeps it from being perfect is very minor. There is a dent along the vertical edge of the outer base where it must have been dropped years ago (see photos with black pens pointing to it). The dent is not readily noticeable due to where it is located, but is evident on close inspection. The surface of the copper has no major scratches and has not been cleaned by grinding or the use of heavy abrasives. And of course, a better hand crafted example would be hard to find today without paying a lot more than what is offered here.
SHIPPING: All US mainland buyers pay $11.30 for well packed and insured USPS Standard Post (this is an estimated savings of about $1 to $3 since insurance and tracking are also INCLUDED in the above quoted amount for all mainland US addresses). If you live in Texas or in an adjacent state, simply email me for a revised quote. A faster shipping option is also available, too (see shipping section below for Priority Mail option). No handling or packing fees are ever charged and fragile items will be double boxed for maximum protection. All international buyers will pay only the exact shipping costs for all verifiable locations outside the continental US mainland. Please note that import duties, taxes and other charges are not included in the item price or shipping costs and these additional charges are the Buyer's responsibility. We do offer a petition for VAT relief on the behalf of the buyer which may help reduce certain import taxes should your country allow such petitions for items over 100 years old. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to purchasing this item -- thanks.
RETURN POLICY: Satisfaction and peace of mind are guaranteed for all Docs Antiques Ruby Lane listings -- please refer directly to our Service Pledge and our Return Policy for full details. And this means that if you are unhappy with your purchase, then you may return it by sending the item back undamaged and post marked within seven days of original receipt for a refund (certain shipping costs are non-refundable). Items damaged during shipping are covered by insurance and while this rarely happens because we double box, we will gladly help you file your insurance claim should it ever be necessary (to date, we have had only two claims for damage from shipping). Of course, never send an item back that was damaged by shipping since that will void the original insurance. Instead, contact us for help and we will gladly assist.
PAYMENT OPTIONS: We accept checks on US Banks (no temporary checks, all checks must have 9 digit routing code; item ships after check fully clears), USPS money orders, PayPal or contact us with your verified address for more options. If you wish to use a credit card by way of PayPal, that option becomes available after you submit a Ruby Lane purchase order (see Terms of Sale for additional information). Once submitted, a PayPal icon will appear at the bottom of this listing and then you may proceed from there if you wish to pay via PayPal.
