Vintage toy ironstone tureen and cover in the Grape Octagon pattern by the Red Cliff Company from the 1950s or 1960s. The small and accurate details on both the cover and tureen make the item visually appealing. The vessel and cover are fluted and scalloped and there is a bunch of grapes forming the finial. The original Grape Octagon pattern in molded white ironstone was produced by such Staffordshire potteries as Jason Furnival, Challinor & Co., J Clementson, Elsmore and Forster, Bougham & Mayer, Livesly & Powell, Samuel Alcock, Edward Walley, Hughes & Co. Edward Corn to name just a few. The handles also have grape clusters molded beneath them. The Red Cliff Company (Chicago, Illinois) was a distributing and decorating company organized by Fred Clifford in 1950 that contracted with the Hall China Company (East Liverpool, Ohio) to produce and market excellent reproductions of mid-1800s ironstone. All Red Cliff wares were clearly marked and stamped with the Red Cliff logo. There at least a dozen different marks used by Hall China to identify their Red Cliff ironstone wares. The impressed mark on this toy tureen is less common and most Red Cliff marks were printed and stamped rather than impressed (see Lerner 1983:365). According to several sources, the Red Cliff ironstone wares were produced from 1950 (Lerner 1983:364-365) to 1977 (Gates and Omerod 1982:73; Stoltzfus and Snyder 1997:21). If you collect miniature ironstone wares or enjoy nice vintage reproductions that were made over 35 years ago of ironstone patterns originally from the 1840s and 1850s, then you may want to purchase this nice example while it is still available. And as always, this Red Cliff toy tureen also comes with my Docs Antiques `no fault' satisfaction guarantee or you may return it using my return policy for a refund.
SIZE: This little tureen stands 4 inches tall (with cover on) or 3 5/8 inches with its cover off. The main body is 3 1/8 inches across at the top and the round opening at the top is about 1 3/4 inches across (diameter). The maximum width of the tureen is 3 7/8 inches at the protruding handles. The base of the tureen is 2 3/8 inches across. The tureen is a nice small size for displaying with other toy ceramics and will certainly capture attention in any setting.
CONDITION: This tureen is in very good condition with just one small chip on the inside lip of the tureen that is not visible when the cover is in place. Beyond this single chip, the tureen and cover have no other damage and NO hairlines, NO stains, NO repairs and NO restorations. A blue pen points to the small chip which is only 1/8 inches wide. The only other declarations to note are minor productions flaws where the wet clay was bumped before it dried (a small 1/16 inch dent on the rim) and a slightly skewed handle (see all photos). And if the buyer is not completely satisfied, then he/she may return this toy tureen for a refund (see our refund policy noted below).
SHIPPING: All mainland US buyers pay just $8.80 for properly packed, insured USPS Standard Post mail (this is an estimated savings of about $1 to $2 since insurance is also INCLUDED in the above quoted amount for all mainland US addresses). See Priority shipping listed under other USPS options if you wish to use a faster shipping method. Docs Antiques never charges more than it actually costs to ship the item to you and we will refund any excess should you live near us. All international buyers will pay only the exact shipping costs for all verifiable locations outside the continental US mainland. Please note that import duties, taxes and other charges are not included in the item price or shipping costs and these additional charges are the Buyer's responsibility. We do offer a petition for VAT relief on the behalf of the buyer which may help reduce certain import taxes should your country allow such petitions for items over 100 years old. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to purchasing this item -- thanks.
RETURN POLICY: Satisfaction and peace of mind are guaranteed for all Docs Antiques listings -- please refer directly to our Service Pledge and our Return Policy for full details. And this means that if you are unhappy with your purchase, you may return this RED CLIFF TOY IRONSTONE TUREEN & COVER c1960 undamaged by sending it back post marked within seven days of receipt for a refund (see terms of sale for full details). Items damaged during shipping are covered by insurance and while this rarely happens because we double box, we will gladly help you file your claim should it ever be necessary (to date, we have had only two claims for damage from shipping in over 7 years). Of course, never send an item back that was damaged by shipping since that will void the original insurance. Instead, contact us for help and we will gladly assist.
PAYMENT OPTIONS: Ask about our Lay-away program if you want to spread out your payments. We accept checks on US Banks (no temporary checks, all checks must have 9 digit routing code; item ships after check fully clears), USPS money orders, PayPal or contact us with your verified address for more options. If you wish to use a credit card by way of Paypal, that option becomes available after you submit a Ruby Lane purchase order (see Terms of Sale for additional information). Once submitted, a PayPal icon will appear at the bottom of this listing and then you may proceed from there if you wish to pay via Paypal.
