c1845 Gaudy Broad Brush Hand Painted Ironstone Leaf or Relish Dish

Antique Staffordshire Ironstone leaf dish (relish or pickle dish) with gaudy hand painted decoration using a broad-brush style from the 1840s. This dish is molded in the shape of shell or leaf and was used for serving relishes, pickles, nuts, candies, sweet meats and desserts in the mid 1800s. It is hand decorated under the glaze in a special style that was popular in mid nineteenth century and which consists of large stylized floral motifs accented in black. There are over 200 individual brush strokes used to paint the designs in bright green, cranberry red, pure black and royal blue. The result is both stylistically primitive as well as pleasing to the eye. There is no makers mark on the back of the dish and any one of a number of Staffordshire potteries may have produced it. Some of the more common ironstone factories in the 1840s include: Boote, Davenport, Edwards, Alcock, Challinor, Clementson, Meakin, Maddock, Wedgwood (formerly Podmore, Walker & Co) and Walley to name just a few.

Most ironstone relish dishes are either plain molded white ironstone or decorated with romantic transfer prints of exotic landscapes and architecture. Hand painted antique relish dishes are most uncommon and probably make up less than one in every five hundred to one thousand seen today. And because these relish dishes were frequently used, many of them exhibit wear and small rim chips. The dish offered here has a small chip off of one leaf tip as noted in the Condition section presented below. It is not large and given the hand painted pattern on this dish, is easily not noticed due to the bright colors and large brush strokes. And so if you collect antique ironstone, gaudy painted Staffordshire or simply enjoy primitive but festive dishes , then you may certainly want to considering buying this dish since it is guaranteed to capture attention in most any setting. And as always, this relish dish also comes with a full satisfaction guarantee or return it for a refund (some fees are nonrefundable, see return policy full details explained farther below).

SIZE: This dish measures 8 3/4 inches long by 5 1/8 inches wide and stands about 1 1/2 inches tall. It has a 3/8 inch tall thick oval footring that seats the dish perfectly flat and level. The dish is neither too small nor too large and is the perfect size for displaying on a shelf, up right in a dish stand or simply out in the open or among other collectibles in a cabinet.

CONDITION: This relish dish has just one small chip off the end of one of its flutes (see photos with pen pointing to the chip). A thin rim chip about 1/2 inch long and 1/16 inch thick is missing from the tip of a lobe and the exposed area is cosmetically colored white (appears reversible). There is no in-filling and so the missing chip could be professionally repaired and filled in if one so wished. Other than that one small chip, the dish has no other chips and no cracks, hairlines, star cracks, stains, major scratches or restorations. The glaze is shiny and has no crazing and all the colors are as bright as the day they emerged from a kiln some 165 years ago. A better example would be hard to find today without paying more than double the price offered here. And as always, this painted ironstone relish dish also comes with my Docs Antiques `no fault' satisfaction guarantee or you may return it using my return policy for a refund minus shipping.
