An excellent example of a rare, high quality, teak bodied tropical hand and stand camera, made in England by London Stereoscopic Company c1905.
The polished teak and brass body is very clean, with signs of light use.
This is a rollfilm, made for 14x9 cms (5x3.5ins) postcard sized negatives and it is adapted for use also with 120 film.
The original, working Bausch and Lomb 'Unicum' 1 -1/100 shutter is set into a polished wood panel and is fitted with an original unnamed polished brass lens. The shutter housing shows some tarnishing and pitting, but it is otherwise very good both optically and cosmetically.
All the brass work retains its polished, lacquered finish, but with a small degree of tarnishing and some scuffing.
The black leather bellows are in excellent condition, with some very slight wear to the finish, but no damage.
The leather carrying handle is intact and in very good order.
The camera has a manufacturer's plaque on the rear. 'The Service' London Stereoscopic Co. Regent Street, London W, British Manufacture. Although it does not say 'King's Own Tropical', it is definitely a variation of that design and was possibly intended for use by the military.
An nice example of this highly collectable camera.
