Webster's Dictionary defines a "masterpiece" as "a work done with extraordinary skill or artistic achievement." I have been fortunate enough lately to acquire several jewels which meet this criteria, and I am proud to present the "Masterpiece collection" for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!

Dating to ca. 1670, this magnificent miniature of one of Rembrandt's most famous self-portraits is a skillful, extremely early copy of the Old Master himself, and is certainly a Masterpiece in every sense of the word! This jewel of a painting comes directly from my personal collection of fine portrait miniatures, but as tax time is looming, I have decided to offer it for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!

This magnificent miniature portrait features the artist at the age of about 30-35, and is copied taken from a larger self-portrait painted ca. 1645. Rembrandt van Rijn (1607-1669) is still considered the best of the Dutch Old Master artists of the 17th century, and this academic copy truly captures the detail and trademark lighting techniques of the original! This copy was likely painted in Holland and taken back to England to be framed. The copper-gilt frame dates considerably later than the painting (ca. 1820), and is engraved "Rembrandt/1607-1669" in elegant script at bottom of the frame.

This miniature is in incredible condition for its 330+ years; there is no flaking or losses, and the surface has developed a subtle and desirable "craquler" over the centuries. The miniature measures 1 3/4" x 1 3/8" sight size, and 2" x 1 3/4" in the engraved frame. As is proper with the medium of oil on copper, there is no crystal covering the portrait; oils must "breathe," and this is the correct manner in which to frame this superb masterpiece in miniature.

The reverse of the frame shows the back of the copper plate, which shows the correct patina for a miniature of this age. The miniature is secured into the frame with 29 tiny claws, all of which are intact. There is a tiny loop at the top of the frame, allowing this work of art to be hung in a display cabinet or in a small corner of a wall.

"Cabinet miniatures" were popular with wealthy persons interested in fine art during the 17th- and 18th-centuries, and I do not doubt that this was originally housed in one of the special cabinets built for this purpose. Today, it could be worn around the neck as an impressive pendant, or be hung in the finest of miniature cabinets or even the poshest of doll houses!

Simply a marvelous example of 17th-century Dutch art, this historic work of art will compliment the finest collection of period portrait miniatures. It would also make a SUPERB holiday gift for any lady or gentleman who loves the best in Old Master art! (Or better yet, treat yourself this year; you deserve it!) Do not miss this masterpiece in miniature; 60-day layaway is available, and USPS shipping is FREE!
