Dating to c.1830 for and inscribed for 1850, this pretty ring is still a highly wearable jewel after nearly two centuries!
Exquisitely romantic in style and sentiment, the bezel of this lovely ring takes the motif of three forget-me-nots set with Persian turquoise cabochons, seed pearls, and sparkling bright red rubies! The bezel of the ring measures just over 5/8" long x 3/8" wide, and all of gems are set in pushed-up, closed-backed collets of 15k gold (unmarked but tested). The six pearls measure 3 mm in diameter, and the eight turquoise cabochons measure 2 mm in diameter. Three rich red natural Burma rubies nest in the center of each flower, and the result is a colorful posy for the finger!
In keeping with many rings of the 1820s and 1830s, the shoulders on this example are forked, and deeply chased and engraved with a foliate motif finished with a forget-me-not on each side! The shank of the ring is gently fluted, tapering back to a plain hoop. This ring also holds a story of sentiment; the inside of the shank is engraved "Elizabeth Thorne to Mary J./Aug. 1st, 1850" in elegant script! This ring was given as a token of friendship from one lady to another 20 years after the ring was crafted; perhaps Miss Thorne never had children, so she chose to present it to her friend Mary? We will never know what the relationship was between Elizabeth and Mary, but this ring survives as a testament to their deep regard for one another, and is a lovely example of sentimental jewelry.
This ring shows some early restoration, but nothing which hinders its wear today; sometime prior to 1850, one half of the back of the shank was reinforced with a second gold backing. The inscription is engraved over this addition, so we know that it is very early. However, it is certainly sound enough to be worn with confidence, and looks lovely on the hand! One of the pearls has lost a tiny bit of its nacre, and a few of the turquoises have darkened somewhat, but this is to be expected in a ring made from these materials and nearing its third century, and I have set my price with this bit of wear in mind. All of the gems are original to the ring, and the three rubies are free of chips. SO ROMANTIC!
Currently a size 6, this ring appears never to have suffered re-sizing, and weighs 2.54 grams. The plainness to the rear of the shank would allow for conservative sizing up or down by a good lapidary for little cost. This charming ring is a delight to wear; it is oh-so-feminine, and has been treasured by many loving hands over the generations - let the next hand be yours! It would also make a romantic holiday gift or promise ring for any lady fond of historic fine jewelry! This ring will be shipped in a gift box suitable for storing or giving.
