MASTERPIECE Large Edwardian 70 Carat Citrine Portrait Cameo/Pearl/22k Necklace, c.1910!
Dating to c.1910, this fabulous necklace has survived the past 100+ years in outstanding, all-original condition, and boasts a huge, magnificently-carved citrine cameo portrait of a beautiful turn-of-the-century maiden! The outstanding craftsmanship, 22k hand-cast and engraved gold frame and findings, and all-around beauty of this jewel is one-of-a-kind, and truly worthy of Masterpiece status!
This Edwardian jewel is so gorgeous, it is hard to know where to begin! The star of the necklace is the massive, hand-carved citrine cameo, with its Art Nouveau-influenced portrait of a fashionable lady of the era. This portrait is so distinctive that I believe that it is meant to represent a specific sitter rather than a "stock" image; certainly, everything about this necklace is custom-made! The surface the cameo is frosted, and the sides and back are richly faceted; this frosted look was popular from c.1870-1920, and this is the MOST exquisite example I have ever seen, in or out of reference books!
This cameo measures 1 1/2" long x 1 1/4" wide, and the deep, natural golden citrine weighs approx. 70 carats! The subject is the left-facing bust of a young maiden, with her face tilted slightly upwards, and her abundant, wavy hair pulled back into a low knot with a few delicate tendrils framing her face. (She looks rather like the character of "Lady Mary" on Downton Abbey!) She has a lovely long neck, and wears a draped blouse with a rose blooming on one shoulder. The lady's face and hair are carved with the utmost delicacy. Clearly, whomever carved this cameo was a master!
The cameo is framed in a richly hand-engraved frame of 22k yellow gold, which is both elegant and very substantial. The rubbed-over edge of the frame is milligrained. The black silk cord necklace itself measures 20" long, not including the drop with its two original, natural pearls. The pendant drop, also 22k gold, boasts fabulous yet subtle Art Nouveau openwork scrolls, and is attached to the cord with hand-engraved end caps (all gold unmarked but tested to 22k). The pair of intricately pierced and engraved gold slides measure 1/2" long each, and the cord is finished with two additional engraved gold caps. One can wear the necklace with the slides at any position that you wish, and every element of this jewel is in museum-worthy, immaculate condition!
The only addition to this jewel is the 14k clasp; when I first discovered this incredible necklace, the original jump ring was frozen and would not open. I have replaced it with a new safety clasp which is just the right size, and now this superb necklace is ready to wear with anything from blue jeans to that little black dress! Best of all, every inch of this jewel is a work of art in itself, and both the necklace and cameo are as pristine as the most discerning collector could hope for, with no cracks, chips or scratches to the cameo! This necklace weighs 25.5 grams, and the glow of the 22k gold and shimmering cameo make a fantastic contrast with the black silk cord!
Simply a wonderfully wearable, investment-worthy necklace, this jewel also lights up anything you choose to wear it with! It is just as gorgeous today as when it first adorned the neck of a lady of wealth and fashion - quite likely, the lady pictured - over a century ago, and the design is timeless! If you collect the ultimate in Art Nouveau or Edwardian jewelry, this is a necklace to wear and treasure forever. It would also make the ultimate gift for any lady fond of the best in antique jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box suitable for giving or storing. Do not miss this top-quality Masterpiece; I do not expect to find another, layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
