UNISEX Federal American Diamond/Pearl 10k Gold Ring, c.1795!
Dating to c.1790-1800, this is a rare and superbly wearable American-made Georgian era ring!
This rare jewel is a scarce and beautiful example of the Federal American lapidary's art, and it is suitable for wear by a lady, or as a dashing pinky ring for a gentleman! This is a simply beautiful jewel which has survived over 210 years in phenomenally well-preserved condition!
The bezel of this historic ring measures 5/8" tall x 7/8" wide, and takes the shape of a diamond, with a genuine rose-cut diamond set in the center of a 14k yellow gold plaque surrounded by natural pearls! The diamond is foiled and closed at the back, and is mounted in a cut-down collect of sterling grade silver. The diamond measures 1.5 mm, stands 1.5 mm proud of the setting, and weighs approx. 5 points.
The diamond is set against a lovely higher-karat gold plaque which boasts a sunburst motif; I have seen this design in other Federal American rings dating to the end of the 18th century. Sixteen natural silvery light gray seed pearls completes the bezel of this desirable jewel; the pearls are graduated in size from 1.5 mm to 3 mm each! The shoulders of the ring are forked and fluted, tapering back to a substantial triple shank.
As with all Federal American jewelry, this ring is unmarked, but tests to 10k gold. Best of all, it has survived into the 21st century in wonderful, all-original condition, without losses or replacements! The only sign of repair is the re-setting of the top pearl, which shows a minuscule trace of glue visible only under 10x magnification. A few of the pearls have sunk a bit in their settings, but this is considered perfectly acceptable in a ring of this great age, and does not detract from the appearance nor the value of this otherwise intact jewel! This ring is curved to fit the finger - another sign of fine craftsmanship - and is SO comfortable on the hand!
This ring is a size 6 1/4, and could be conservatively re-sized by a lapidary familiar with early jewelry, but if you wish to have it re-sized, I would recommend it be done only with a laser, as cutting would compromise the complexity of the triple shank. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a highly wearable Federal American ring; it it's Neoclassical design makes it suitable for day or evening wear! This ring weighs in at a hefty 4.7 grams. Provenance is from a Pennsylvania estate, where it had been in the same family for over a century.
