Dating to c.1840-1850, this is a rare example of a repousse gold brooch set with a huge lapis lazuli cabochon!
Measuring 2" long x 1 1/2", this superb brooch epitomizes all that is so wonderful about Romantic-era jewelry! This grand jewel boasts gorgeous repousse work with the foliate scallops and hand-engraved swirls typical of fine jewelry of the early 1840s. The brooch is set with a massive natural lapis lazuli cabochon measuring 1 1/4" x 7/8" x 8 mm tall! This lapis is a stunning shade of rich royal blue, with tight veins of dark blue, white and specks of gold. This brooch is American in origin, as it tests to 10kt rather than 9kt gold.
The lapis stone is mounted in a closed-back collet of 10k yellow gold (unmarked but tested). As with most of the repousse gold jewelry of this decade, it is of hefty hollow construction. This gorgeous jewel is on all-original condition, with no repairs or losses after over 170+ years of careful wear! It retains its original "T and C" clasp, and a loop at the back which would allow this impressive brooch to also be worn as a pendant. SO PRETTY!
Weighing in at a very substantial 27.2 grams, this brooch lights up on anything you choose to wear it; it looks splendid on a jacket lapel or a sweater! This is the first lapis-set brooch of this date that I have ever discovered; I have often seen enameled mourning jewels of this general style, but never one which celebrates life with this glorious blue and gold combination! Luckily, it has survived into the 21st century in fresh-as-a-a daisy condition, and looks just as beautiful as when it was proudly worn by a lady of fashion in the 1840s.
If you collect the best in Victorian fine jewelry, this brooch will make a stellar addition to your collection! It would also make a wonderful holiday gift for that special lady fond of antique or lapis lazuli jewelry. This brooch will be shipped in a gift box suitable for storing or giving. Do not miss it; I do not expect to find another, and holiday shipping is FREE!
