Dating to c.1690 for the posy ring and c.1810 for the bezel conversion, this ring is proof that some marriages were made in Heaven!
This is a wonderfully substantial jewel, and is still highly wearable after 320 years! This ring dates to c.1690, and was almost certainly handed down through generations of the same family, as a bezel with hair beneath an optical crystal was added c.1810, giving it a new lease on life! The result is a gorgeous, wearable jewel which celebrates love across three centuries!
The bezel of this ring measures 14.5 mm x 10 mm. It is wrought in 15k gold, and holds a swatch of woven light brown hair beneath its original optical crystal (all gold unmarked but tested). The frame of the bezel is lightly decorated with engraving, and the shoulders of the ring have been topped with lovely engraved gold plaques. This sentimental jewel was already an antique at the time of its conversion; the shank of the ring is a rare pre-Georgian posy ring!
The 22k ring dates to c.1690, and is deeply engraved with the posy "God's Providence is Our Inheartance." (Note that the "in" is engraved above the rest of the posy, and the spelling of "inheritance" is mis-spelt; spelling was not as fixed in the 17th century as it is today. I find that this only adds to the ring's charm and history!) The posy indicates that this jewel was crafted as a wedding ring at the end of the 17th century, and from its substantial size and weight, it was likely given by a lady to her intended husband over three centuries years ago. Luckily, the Georgian-era lady or gentleman who had this ring converted chose an expert lapidary, as the posy is 99% intact. (The first two letters of the word "God" was re-engraved on the back of the added bezel at the time of conversion.)
Best of all, this is a very sturdy jewel! Most posy rings were crafted from very thin gauge gold; this ring measures 5 mm wide and weighs a hefty 4.4 grams! This ring is a size 7 1/2, and cannot be re-sized due to the posy. It is suitable for wear by a lady or a gentleman, and looks very handsome on the hand. Simply a fantastic survival, this ring is must-have for any antique jewelry collection. It is in excellent condition, and is investment-worthy.
