Pyrography (or wood burning), often referred to as Flemish Art, was a popular decorative style common in the early 1900's. It is often associated with the Arts and Crafts movement because of its simplicity and artistic qualities. This adorable item was probably made for a young child to put on her desk. It consists of a block of wood that has a pen holder attached to it. On the face of the wood block the is a wood-burned decorative element that consists of a turtle, several mushrooms, some grasses, and the name "Lois". The wood base measures 6 inches by 3 ½ inches by 3/4 inch thick. It is in very nice condition showing very little sign of wear. If you know somebody named Lois, then this would be a wonderful little piece to give as a gift.
