Inlaid Flag-Decorated Patriotic Folk Art Dresser Box

If folk art is your passion, then you will thoroughly enjoy this wonderful dresser box with an inlaid patriotic theme. The design consists of an American flag with a bird (eagle?) on top of the flag pole along with a segmented wheel motif. Since the flag has 48 stars, the box must have been made between 1912 and 1959. Given its construction and the general look of the piece, it might be of World War II vintage. The box measures 8 3/8 inches long, 7 3/4 inches deep, and 4 inches high. It is very sturdy in construction using ½ inch wood that has been all surfaced on the outside with 1/8 inch mahogany veneer and then inlaid with a combination of maple, mahogany and crosscut plywood for a layering effect. The piece has been beautifully covered with several coats of varnish. Inside the bottom and sides of the box are lined with red felt. The box has a lock, but alas the key is missing. However, we have found in the past that it is often possible to find old keys in antique malls and cut one to fit and operate the lock. The escutcheon on the lock appears to be a piece of heavy gauge aluminum. This type of art has often been made by sailors aboard ship as a means of killing time. We feel that this box is probably a piece of sailor art from WW II.

The condition of the box is excellent. It is very solid and beautifully made. There are the minor dings and dents that are acquired with time and there is some wear to the interior fabric. Other than that, it is in wonderful shape and ready to be proudly used and displayed. What a great piece to display on your dresser, or perhaps give to that special man in your life!
