Fascinated with archeology or ancient Rome? Are you an Anglophile? This booklet is for you. Sweetpea Cottage has been fortunate enough to obtain, and offer for sale, this fascinating publication about the Roman baths of Bath, England.
This booklet is entitled " The Roman Baths of Bath", compiled by Alfred J. Taylor F.R.I.B.A., published by the authority of the Bath Corporation. The price is one shilling and it was published in 1940. The inside cover describes the book as a catalogue of antiquities discovered during the excavations on the site of the Roman Thermae at Bath, with illustrations and plan of the Roman Baths. The dimensions of the book are 4 3/4 inches by 7 1/4 inches. There are a total of 58 pages. The book consists of historical information about the baths, material describing the discoveries made during the excavations, the modern baths as they existed in 1940, and lots of terrific old advertisements. There are two fold-outs on light-weight paper, one being a map of the Roman bath, and the other being a drawing of some of the architectural items that were unearthed. There are multiple photos of archeological materials that were uncovered, such as old lead pipes, bath remains, and carved gem stones. The text is fascinating throughout the book, as it was clearly written by an expert, designed to thoroughly inform the public.
The condition of the book in top-notch. The soft-cover is very sound, with only minor staining from some fingerprints. The book is tight with no loose pages, no tears, and no folds. There are three lines of pencil notations on the back cover that are times, probably noting when tours were available. Look over the scans carefully and you will see just how wonderful this item is. For a 65 year old book, published as England was gearing up for World War II, it is a great find in outstanding condition.
