Goberg Hand Hammered Jugendstil Owl Bell, Germany

Sweetpea Cottage is offering this marvelous handmade iron and brass Jugendstil Owl Bell that stands 7 3/4 inches tall, is 3 1/4 inches wide, and 2 1/4 inches deep. It was made by Hugo Berger (Working as Goberg) in Germany during the early 1900's. The piece is made from a combination of hand hammered steel and brass. The bell is steel with a brass wash on the surface while the owl perched on top is steel with solid brass applied eyes and beak. The piece is signed “Germany” on the back of the owl. Even though it does not have the "Goberg" signature there is no question that this is a Goberg piece. He was very erratic with the way that he signed items, sometimes using Goberg, sometimes Germany, sometimes both, and sometimes nothing. This piece is definitely his, however, because of the classic Goberg owl and strong similarity to another signed Goberg owl bell that we have owned. The condition is excellent. It has been well treated over the years. There is a small hole in the head of the owl that was probably placed there at the time of manufacture. It is not clear what the purpose of the hole might have been. It is possible to occasionally run into Goberg's owl motif on match holders, desk paper clips, and a few other items, but we have never seen another bell. No doubt there are some more out there somewhere, but people seem reluctant to part with them. When you see this beauty in person, you will understand why. The charm it exudes is wonderful.

Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Hugo Berger who worked under the name of Goberg is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S. We search far and wide to find Goberg items to satisfy our growing clientele. Sweetpea Cottage is one of the largest dealers in Goberg items that you will find on the internet.
