Before Gouverneur Warren became known as the "Savior of Little Round Top" at the Battle of Gettysburg he was an accomplished engineer and surveyor with the U.S. Army. We are offering an opportunity to obtain an exceptionally rare map that he prepared from a trip through Nebraska and Dakota Territories in 1855, 56 and 57. The map and accompanying documents were printed for public use in 1875 by the Government Printing Office in Washington, DC. The softcover book is 125 pages of information including fauna, flora, and geology and paleontology of the territories. The folding map is enormous, measuring 46 1/4 x 32 3/4 inches. This copy is an original item, never having been rebound in its original paper covers. It has survived nicely, but shows some wear. The cover is chipped and the spine has splits. The binding is still solid, however. It is a prime candidate for some loving preservation work. The map has splits on the folds that have all been carefully reinforced with archival tape. There are several copies of this publication and map available on the internet but they have all been rebound. This is 100% original.
The map, "showing Lieutenant Warren's explorations in the country of Nebraska and Dakota, and including the trails of explorers since Long is one of the maps of the Topographical Engineers which is a landmark of the period of 1859"-Wheat. "This re-issue of material was made to meet the interest awakened by the Black Hills gold discovery of 1874" - Howes.
